Paul Carus German American writer based in Chicago and La Salle America. As editor of the ‘Open court publishing company,’ he published hundreds of books and articles in the fields of Buddha and his Dhamma, religion, philosophy, science and mathematics. Paul Carus was born at Illenburg in Germany on July 18, 1852. He had come to the United States in 1857 and established a business and publishing company in Chicago. The Publishing company published over 500 books on philosophy, science, eastern religion and other subjects. The Paul Carus award for interreligious understanding was Instituted in 2001 by the Council for a Parliament of the world’s religions, following a donation by the family Dr Carus. Paul Carus brought Buddhist visitors to stay at his home, La Salle became known as ‘Buddhism’s Gateway to the West.’ ‘According to old records’ was the most influential work of Carus. Dr. Carus died at home on February 11, 1919.
